It was today reported that football giants Manchester United are in the process of creating their own social media platform after appointing SapientNitro as its digital media agency.
With an estimated global audience of over 650 million Manchester United fans, the club has set its sights on a potential 500 million following on its own social media platform.
In the year since it launched a Facebook fan page, Manchester United has seen some 20 million people click the well known 'like' button!
This has driven the club to believe their own platform will help them to further gain access to lucrative foreign markets (particularly in Asia) and grasp a stronger foothold in the global marketing of the football world.
The platform will help to engage fans with exclusive content similar to the way MUTV does for television. There will also be room for eCommerce functionality to sell the clubs merchandise, as well as the opportunity for brands for both sponsorship and advertising.
We have recently been discussing on this blog the power of social media, and discussed in depth which platform would be best for businesses. Well, this takes things to a whole new level with, as well as utilising the most common platfroms readily available, Manchester United have taken the bold step in creating their own!
