Instagram posts are going to be subject to a test of fact-checking them in the same way that Facebook checks posts for fake content and news.

If posts are identified as containing false content, they'll be marked and their reach will be dramatically reduced. One immediate impact will be that the posts won't be shown in the Instagram hashtags section or Explore tab.

It is also reported that Instagram will begin to show pop-up warning messages if a user searches for a topic that is known to return high levels of false content or misinformation.

Some critics have questioned the right of Facebook to deploy fact-checking routines, but the need for greater clarity of information is something Instagram is under increasing pressure to address.
